What is periodontitis?

Due to poor oral hygiene, the gap between the tissue supporting your teeth (periodontium) and your gums can house bacteria. When this gap becomes filled with infection-causing germs, periodontitis occurs. Periodontitis may cause your gums to recede, exposing the bone in the jaw and making your teeth more prone to germ attacks. As your jaw bone is ‘eaten away’ by infection, your teeth may actually fall out.

Apart from tooth loss, complications arising from periodontitis include bleeding and painful gums, foul breath (halitosis), teeth sensitivity, and deep pockets between your gums and your teeth. When left untreated, the infectious agents present in the gums may enter the blood stream and affect other parts of your body, such as your lungs and your heart, causing more serious diseases such as coronary artery disease and stroke.
