State plans for improvement on dental anesthesia use

A Texas watchdog agency, The Sunset Advisory Commission, approved changes to the State Board of Dental Examiners on August 22 in an attempt to fix problems caused by a lack of proper anesthesia use in dental offices. The changes were recommended following reports revealing “complications from dental procedures using anesthesia have caused serious harm to Texas patients, including death.”

The risk of complications from sedation rises as the number of dentists who offer the service increase due to a lack of office inspections from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Kelly Parker, the director of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, said that she and her team were trying their very best to maintain a safe standard for the public, but a lack of funds makes it nearly impossible to perform the necessary investigations. In response to this, State Representative Larry Gonzales, who is a part of the Sunset Commission, said that state representatives would begin the search for funds.

“We know where the deficiencies are. We know how to address them. You’re going to have to have an emergency plan. We’re going to do those inspections… and we’re going to pay for it,” Gonzales promised in a statement.
