Dental anxiety a major factor for Americans
It’s probably no big surprise that most people aren’t crazy about visiting the dentist. A lot of people feel uncomfortable with someone else cleaning their teeth, as this is a fairly personal activity in general. What may come as a bit of a shock are the findings of a report issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in which it was stated that about half of adults skipped their regular dentist appointments in 2009.
The truth is, while many people simply don’t enjoy the dentist, about 15 percent of Americans actively avoid having their teeth cared for due to serious fears and anxiety. Surprisingly, doctors have suggested that the majority of anxiety sufferers are older, as they are more likely to have had a negative or painful dental experience before modern technology and sedation techniques became commonplace.
To alleviate some of this extreme fear, many dentists are beginning to offer sedatives or anesthesia to their patients, even for routine cleanings. At the office of Dr. Sid K. Steadman D.D.S., your comfort and dental health are our priorities. We can work with you to implement a number of techniques that will relieve your stress and make your visit a more pleasant experience. Call us at (512) 259-3365 to set up your appointment today.
