A great smile can improve your employability
According to an article published by Freakanomics writer Stephen J. Dubner, a person’s smile can have a big impact on his or her labor-market outcome. In his article, Dubner summarizes a study conducted by Sherry Glied and Matthew Neidell called “The Economic Value of Teeth” in which the pair explore the correlation between populations with fluoridated water and average earnings. The research found that women who had access to fluoridated water as they were growing up now earn about four percent more than women who did not.
Dubner uses this information in combination with other reports of the relationship between appearance and pay grade to support his conclusion that “as much as we might like to think that wages are perfectly correlated with talent and effort, more trivial factors always come into play.”
